and Turning on of our DIY Lights
Friday 2nd December 2016

timetable -
Appledore is,
unfortunately, not allowed to put up Christmas lights along the
Quay, as apparently the street lights are not strong enough to
hold them. This is a battle the village has been fighting with
Devon County Council for several years, and despite being
promised new lamp posts this year these have never materialised.
However not to be left out, Appledore will yet again turn on its
Christmas lights, but with a difference, they will be the now
annual Do it Yourselves lights; everyone will bring
their own, be it a lantern, night light in a jam jar, torch,
simple or outrageous! Friday 2nd December is the date and the
event is organised by Appledore Visitors Association.
Events will take place throughout the day. The Christmas Craft
Fair takes place 11am 7pm at St Marys Hall and most
of the shops and cafes will be staying open till 7pm. In
Appledore Hall at 2.00 the local primary school will put on a
Nativity Play for the entire village, a heart-warming not
to be missed event. The same venue hosts the Appledore
youth based Total Theatre School at 4.45 who will be performing
Christmas Folly and Fun. Both are totally free of
charge and all are more than welcome.
Between 4 and 6.30 pm there is a treasure hunt around the village
for the children starting at Appledore Quay Gift shop, which will
also act as the information centre of the afternoon and evening
as well as serving mulled wine and mince pies to customers from
5.00 9.00. Between 4.30 to 7.00 pop in to see Old Films of
Appledore and enjoy mulled wine and mince pies at the Library
courtesy of the Friends of Appledore Library. The wonderful Hubba
Choir will be singing in St Marys Hall between 6.00 and
6.30. Most of the shops and cafes throughout the village will be
open late. At 6.30 on the Quay, Santa will be arriving in unique
style in his gig to hear what all the children would like for
Christmas. At the same time the Seagate will start their festive
treats. At 7.00 the Fun Singers will entertain us until 7.15 when
there will be the countdown on the Quay (Churchfield End) for the
turning on of the Appledore DIY lights, followed by presentations
by the Mayor to all the winners of the 2016 Appledore
Photographic Competition. Appledore Band will then be playing
carols for all to join in, for about an hour, when the pubs take
over with most having a special Christmas theme for the evening.
This will be a real village event to which everyone is invited.
If the weather is too bad for events on the Quay, Santa will be
in a Grotto in the Baptist Church and the carols and
presentations will also be in the Baptists.
Make sure you get your Appledore accommodation for Christmas and New Year too!!
